Cars With a Cause is an annual charity car show benefiting Service Dogs for America.  Our first year in 2016 was a great success and we hope to grow each and every year!  Thanks to the generous sponsors, participants and spectators we were able to donate several thousand dollars to Service Dogs for America.  Each dollar will promote freedom (on a leash) for client’s approved to receive a service dog from their organization.

Cars With a Cause is open to all vehicle types and ages with a registration fee of $10 per entry.  The show will be open to anything with an engine.  As long as we don't have to push it into place it is welcome at the show.

Fun family event, entrance to the event is free for spectators, but there will be a donation booth for Service Dogs for America if you would like to donate.  Cars With a Cause donates 100% of all registration to charity.

Service Dogs for America (SDA)

Founded in 1989 Service Dogs for America (SDA)/Great Plains Assistance Dogs Foundation Inc. is a Jud, North Dakota based non-profit organization that enhances and empowers the lives of individuals with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. SDA continues the rich tradition of encouraging and empowering those with special needs through custom trained service dogs. SDA’s goal and mission is to facilitate specialized training, education, and ensure the placement of service dogs to individuals with special needs, without causing financial burdens.  The average cost to raise and train each service dog can be between $7,000- $30,000, depending on the specialized training, per dog. Each day these dogs significantly impact their partners' lives. People who couldn't do the ordinary activities of daily living that others take for granted are able to function independently with the help of their canine partners.

Service Dogs for America train four types of service dogs:

Mobility Assistance Service Dogs—are trained to assist an individual in a wheel char or with walking by providing stability and balance, push buttons for elevators or automatic doors, turn on lights, pick up dropped items, or open a fridge.  These dogs are partnered with individuals with physical disabilities to assist with activities of daily living.

Emergency Medical Response Dog (EMRD) — is trained to assist an individual with epilepsy or seizure disorder, or hypoglycemic unawareness.  EMRD's are trained to activate an alert system or find help in the event of a medical emergency.  The EMRD's ability to respond and act quickly makes them a trustworthy companion.

  • Seizure Response EMRD's - are trained to stay close to their partner for the duration of the seizure, to intervene and encourage their partner to come out of the seizure state, as well as fetch medications, or a telephone.

  • Diabetic Alert EMRD's - are trained to detect sudden drops in their partner’s blood sugar through scent and alert them so that they can monitor their blood sugar and consume something sweet.  Their ability to detect and react to hypoglycemic episodes helps their partner avoid loss of consciousness and subsequent life threatening effects.

PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) Service Dogs— are trained to perform tasks that mitigate their partner's disability.  They are trained to assist in interrupting anxiety attacks, wake their partner from nightmares or night terrors, heel in front of or circle behind to create space, retrieve or remind their partner to take medications, guide their partner safely to an exit and outside a building in stressful situations.

A specially trained PTSD Service dog can provide a sense of security, calming effects, and physical exercise that can make a positive difference in the life of an individual dealing with the daily challenges of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Facility Dogs— Occasionally, Service Dogs for America has facility dogs available for placement in a nursing home, assisted living center, counseling or juvenile detention center.  Facility dogs are typically dogs who love people and love visiting; they have warm, sensitive personalities and are known for their unconditional love and attention they give to people with whom they interact.
